Note on Cold Cranking
- Cold weather conditions dictate that a starter motor provide more torque to overcome oil viscosity increase as well as increased friction. Even in these extreme conditions, it is still recommended that the cranking current be limited to the current handling capability of the given starter motor.
- To reduce stress on the engine and related components as well as increase the chances of your engine starting, the following should be considered:
To reduce cranking load
- Engine block heater
- Use the manufacturer's recommended oil viscosity for the ambient temperature
- Turn off any unnecessary electrical periphe4rals
Other tips on a properly configured starting system
- Insure that no excessive battery cable runs exist
- Insure that a safe route exists for all electrical cable runs. Allow slack for engine chassis movement.
- Insure proper gauge cabling is used
- Keep battery posts/studs free from corrosion and keep them greased
